Figurative Sculpture
I enjoy creating female figures because I feel I can express myself through them. They are close to my heart, and are informed by my own life experiences. These are all women that encounter some obstacles, but they overcome them and keep going. They take charge of their lives or are just about to.
The small figures are the equivalents of sketches. They are usually made of earthenware clay, sometimes Raku fired. I like the feel of spontaneity about them. They are figures caught in motion. They evoke playfulness and energy. I make sure they do not become overworked to the point that they would lose their quality of immediacy.
The larger sculptures tell stories about life. They are very detailed so they can be quite expressive and more emotionally charged than the small sculptures.
They are hand-built, using coil and pinch method. I pay a lot of attention to the surface of the piece to give the viewer a multisensory experience.
The figures are usually glazed with washes of oxides of various metals and then fired to Cone 10 (2,300° F) in a gas kiln.
