I started working on the series at the beginning of 2008. I have always been strangely fascinated with manneqins, with their lifeless beauty. Their forms and shapes coudn't be farther from reality, yet at the same time they embody that perfection which we all desire.
The Torsos are created of clay. I roll out large slabs that will be cut, torn, and manipulated to create the body. I have an extensive collection of interesting objects, and I use them to texture the slabs. This creates a sharp contrast between the perfect form and the scarred and distressed surface. All these elments give the piece - together with different glazes and lusters that are applied later - intense tactile and visual depth.
While the form represents our dreams and desires, the surface talks about our life experiences: our joys, pains, scars, victories, and losses; everything that creates our identity and character. No matter how much we want to hide them, they will always stay with us. My goal was to address some serious issues in a way that is appealing to the viewer. The form is quite simple, and the surface is very sensuous. The Torsos are serious yet very enjoyable.
The Torsos are wall-hanging sculptures. They are made entirely out of clay. This means that they are somewhat fragile, and have to be handled with care. But if properly looked after, they can bring a lifetime of enjoyment. They are not heavy and can be easily installed. There is a built in hanging system, and a wire is included.
